Can I remove ceiling mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom walk-in closet. It’s been super humid lately and that room doesn't have great air circulation. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call a professional cleaning company or is this something I can tackle myself with a specific product from ACE Hardware?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) caused by surface humidity, you can attempt it yourself. However, given your description of it spreading in a poorly ventilated closet during high humidity, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source.
For a DIY attempt, use a solution of detergent and water or a diluted vinegar mix. Never use bleach, as it only removes the colour and leaves the root structure intact, and its fumes in an enclosed space are hazardous. Scrub gently to avoid releasing spores. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The real fix is addressing the humidity; you must improve air circulation in that closet and use a dehumidifier to keep humidity below 60%, or the mold will return quickly. In Dubai’s climate, this type of growth is often a symptom of condensation due to the extreme contrast between the humid outdoor air and cold AC ducts inside the ceiling void. If the moisture source is a hidden leak from an AC condensate drain or a pipe, DIY cleaning is completely ineffective and the problem will worsen. A professional inspection can identify if the growth is more extensive inside the ceiling cavity and pinpoint the exact moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. |
