Can I remove closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell for about a month. I finally pulled everything out and found a decent amount of black and green fuzzy mold spreading on the back wall and on a few leather bags. We run the AC constantly but the humidity is just relentless. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from ACE Hardware, or should I just call a professional mold removal company, and if so, what’s a realistic cost I should expect for a job like this?

Based on your description of the situation in your Jumeirah villa, I strongly recommend against a DIY approach and advise you to call a professional mold remediation company. The presence of a persistent smell and visible growth on both the wall and personal items like leather bags indicates an established colony. The climate in Dubai, with its relentless humidity and constant AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold, often leading to condensation issues within walls that are not visible.

Using bleach from a hardware store is ineffective and potentially dangerous. It only bleaches the mold's surface without addressing the root hyphae (root structure) and can release harmful spores into the air. Furthermore, improper handling can cross-contaminate other areas of your home.

In the UAE, professional remediation follows strict IICRC guidelines. For a master bedroom closet, a reputable company like Saniservice would conduct a thorough inspection to identify the moisture source (e.g., a condensation line leak, insufficient insulation). The process involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial application to eliminate the colony at its roots, and removal of contaminated porous materials. The cost for a localized job of this size can realistically range from AED 1,500 to AED 4,000, depending on the extent of the infestation and the required repairs.

For a proper assessment and a definitive solution, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
