Can I remove closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to feel damp, and I just found a patch of fuzzy black spots on the back wall and some of our shoes. We keep the AC running most of the time, but this humidity is something else. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

The fuzzy black spots you've described are a classic indicator of active mold growth, likely caused by the high ambient humidity in Dubai, even with constant AC use. The closet's back wall is often a cold surface where condensation forms, creating a perfect microenvironment for mold, especially on organic materials like leather shoes.

While a DIY approach with vinegar can seem tempting for a small patch, it is not recommended. Vinegar is a surface disinfectant and will not address the underlying moisture source or remove mycotoxins and spores embedded in porous materials like drywall. In the UAE's climate, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment.

For a proper resolution, a professional inspection is critical. We use thermal imaging to identify the exact source of the condensation—often a result of the AC's dew point, insufficient insulation, or a leak in the building envelope. Air and surface sampling then identifies the mold species and spore count, which is essential for determining the correct remediation protocol as per UAE standards.

The remediation process involves containment, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial application, and the safe disposal of contaminated porous items. Given the health risks and potential for property damage, professional intervention is the safest and most effective solution.
