Can I remove closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall of our Jumeirah villa has developed a bunch of black spots after the recent humidity. My wife’s shoes and some bags have started to get these specks on them and we’re worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray from Ace Hardware, or given how much our stuff is worth, is it smarter to just call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai for a proper job?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in Dubai for over a decade, I strongly advise against a DIY approach for your Jumeirah villa, especially given the value of the items affected.

The black spots you're describing are a classic sign of a humidity-driven mold infestation, extremely common here post-humidity season. While bleach from Ace might seem like a quick fix, it's a surface-level solution that fails to address the root cause—the moisture source within your wall or ceiling void. Bleach is also largely ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood, and can actually aggravate certain mold types, causing them to release more spores. The risk of cross-contamination to other areas of your home while attempting cleanup is very high.

In the UAE, proper remediation isn't just about cleaning; it's a controlled process involving containment, advanced air filtration (HEPA scrubbers), and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. For a closet on an external wall, the issue is likely more extensive than visible spots, potentially involving hidden growth within the wall cavity that requires thermal imaging to properly diagnose.

Given the high value of the possessions and the property itself, a professional inspection is the only smart call. We use tools like moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent. For a proper assessment and a guaranteed remediation, call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Don't risk your health or your property with a temporary DIY fix.
