Can I remove closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has a strong damp smell, and I’ve just found black spots spreading on the back wall and some of our shoes. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a few weeks ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description of a strong damp smell and visible black spots spreading in your Mirdif villa closet, this is a situation that warrants significant concern. The Dubai climate, with its intense humidity and reliance on year-round air conditioning, creates a perfect environment for mold growth, particularly in enclosed spaces like closets on exterior walls where condensation can form.

While a supermarket vinegar solution can temporarily remove surface discoloration on non-porous materials, it is not an effective remediation strategy. The mold you see is likely the fruiting body of a deeper colony growing within the wall itself, especially if the damp odor is persistent. Merely wiping the surface will not address this hidden infestation or the underlying moisture problem. Furthermore, improper DIY attempts can inadvertently release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially exacerbating health risks and spreading the contamination.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. UAE regulations and best practices for indoor environmental quality require addressing the root cause to ensure the health and safety of the building's occupants. Our certified professionals at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture intrusion—whether it's a minor condensation issue or a more serious leak. The remediation process then involves containment of the affected area, advanced HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the application of UAE-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its source.
