Can I remove closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit into the closet in the master bedroom, and now I'm seeing a decent amount of black mold spreading on the back wall and on some shoes. We tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back worse. Is this something we can handle ourselves with a proper cleaner, or do we need to call a professional company, and what would that likely cost for a small closet area?

Based on your description, this is a classic case in Dubai where a small AC leak, combined with our high ambient humidity and year-round air conditioning, creates a persistent moisture source. This is not a surface issue you can wipe away.

The black mold you're seeing on the wall and shoes is the visible colony, but the actual fungal structure (hyphae) has likely penetrated the porous surfaces of the drywall and shoe materials. Vinegar is insufficient for porous materials and often exacerbates the problem by adding moisture, allowing the mold to rebound stronger. Attempting DIY removal with store-bought cleaners often disturbs the colony, releasing a high concentration of spores into your living space, which is a health hazard.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict hygiene and environmental standards. For a situation involving an AC leak—a continuous water intrusion source—and penetration into building materials, professional assessment and remediation are strongly advised. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the full extent of the saturation within the wall cavity, which is almost always greater than what is visible. They will then execute a controlled containment procedure, including HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatment, to safely remove the contaminated materials and ensure the root moisture problem is resolved.

For a closet of the size you describe, professional remediation costs can vary but typically start from AED 1,500 to AED 3,000, depending on the extent of the damage behind the wall. This is a prudent investment to protect your health and property. I recommend you contact a certified professional immediately for an inspection.
