Can I remove closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our bedroom closet has had a patch of black mold since that big storm a few weeks ago, and it's slowly getting bigger. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back darker. My wife is worried about the health risks and the damage to our clothes. Is this something I can handle myself with a specific product from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company, and what would that likely cost for a small area like this?

Based on your description, this absolutely requires a professional assessment and remediation. The fact that it's growing after a storm and returned darker after a DIY attempt are major red flags.

In the UAE's climate, that water intrusion from the storm has likely soaked into the ceiling material (gypsum board/plaster) and possibly the concrete slab above, creating a persistent moisture source that vinegar cannot address. Vinegar only bleaches the surface and does not kill the root structure (hyphae). The "darker" return indicates a robust, active colony.

Attempting removal yourself risks severe cross-contamination. Disturbing the mold will release millions of spores into the air, spreading them through your AC system and contaminating your entire apartment and your wife's clothes. This poses significant health risks, especially for respiratory issues.

For a proper remediation, the water-damaged ceiling material must be carefully removed under containment, the underlying structure treated with professional-grade biocides, and the area dried with industrial air movers before rebuilding. This is not a product you can buy at Ace.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations, significant mold issues stemming from water damage often require a certified professional to ensure it is resolved safely and effectively. For a closet-sized area, the cost is typically very reasonable, especially when compared to the health risks and potential for further property damage.

Given the active growth and your health concerns, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. Please call us for a professional inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can provide a precise assessment and quotation.
