Can I remove closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. I only noticed it after that really humid spell we had last week, and now I'm worried it's spreading. I'm trying to figure out if I can tackle this with vinegar and a dehumidifier myself or if I need to call in a professional cleaning service to stop it for good?

Based on your description, what you're seeing is almost certainly active mold growth, and it's a common issue here in Dubai, especially after periods of high humidity like we just had. The outside wall of your closet is likely a "cold bridge," meaning it's cooler than the surrounding air, causing condensation and creating the perfect damp environment for mold to feed on the organic materials in your leather goods.
While a DIY approach with a vinegar solution (white distilled vinegar is best) can remove the visible mold from the surface of your items, it is unlikely to address the root cause. The mold spores have infiltrated the porous leather and are likely present in the closet structure itself. A simple dehumidifier is a great preventative tool but not a remediation solution for an active problem. The critical first step we always recommend is a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture and moisture meters to determine the extent of the infiltration within the wall cavity. This is crucial because if the moisture source isn't permanently resolved, the mold will absolutely return, often worse than before. Attempting a full cleanup yourself can inadvertently aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your bedroom. For health reasons and to guarantee the problem is solved at its source, a professional assessment is strongly advised. We can determine if the situation is contained and manageable or if it requires full remediation.
