Can I remove closet mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week, and I’m worried it’s affecting our clothes. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

Based on the description of black fuzzy spots spreading on the wall, exacerbated by recent high humidity, this is a clear case of active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and constant air conditioning use, which can create significant condensation.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 10 square feet), you can attempt a DIY approach. However, standard bleach is not recommended as it is mostly water and can feed the mold roots deep in porous materials like drywall. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid spore exposure. Crucially, you must identify and correct the moisture source. In a closet, this is often due to poor air circulation or a cold spot from an AC duct causing condensation.

However, given that the mold is on a wall and has gotten worse, it is highly likely the growth penetrates deeper than the surface. Mold on wallboard often means the gypsum core is contaminated, necessitating cutting out and replacing the affected section. Disturbing it incorrectly will aerosolize spores, contaminating your closet and HVAC system. For any persistent, recurring, or larger-than-a-small-patch infestation, a professional inspection is mandatory to assess the true extent and underlying cause.

Our company, Saniservice, provides certified mold inspection and remediation services in full compliance with Dubai Municipality guidelines. We use thermal imaging to find hidden moisture and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations.
