Can I remove damp corner mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s in the corner that’s always a bit damp, and it’s been spreading for a few weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and bleach from Carrefour, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black spot behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation mould, very common in Dubai's humid climate where cool AC walls meet warm, moist air. For a patch smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach can be attempted.

Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water; avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can release harmful fumes in enclosed spaces. Scrub the area with the solution, let it sit for an hour, then wipe dry. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall, improve air circulation in the room, and consider using a desiccant or dehumidifier to keep that corner dry.

However, since your children are already showing respiratory symptoms like coughing, and the mould has been spreading for weeks, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Visible growth often indicates a larger colony within the wall cavity or behind the skirting boards that you cannot see. Disturbing it yourself can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality.

A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent of the problem and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This is vital for determining the right remediation protocol and confirming the environment is safe for your family post-cleanup. For health-related cases, especially with children involved, verified assessment and removal is the prudent course of action.
