Can I remove damp wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp to the touch. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's getting worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company in Dubai to handle it?

The dampness and black speckling on your exterior wall are classic signs of condensation-related mold, very common in Dubai's climate. You should not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can worsen the moisture problem while only bleaching the mold's color, not killing the roots. Vinegar can be effective on small surface areas but is not a long-term solution for a damp wall.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the critical issue is the persistent dampness. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning; you must identify and address the moisture source, which is often condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the humid outside air, or a potential hidden leak.

Given the wall feels damp and the mold is spreading, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cause—whether it's insufficient insulation, a leak in the wall, or condensation from AC ductwork. In many cases, remediation involves fixing the moisture intrusion, properly drying the structure, and then treating the mold. For thorough verification, a post-remediation test from an independent lab can confirm the environment is back to a healthy state.
