Can I remove dinner plate-sized black mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah apartment. It must have been growing there for a while, probably from a hidden AC leak, and the patch is about the size of a dinner plate. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold removal company?

A dinner plate-sized patch of black mold, especially with a suspected AC leak and health symptoms, is not a DIY job. The visible mold is likely just the surface of a larger colony growing within the wall or behind the skirting board due to the constant humidity from the leak.

In Dubai's climate, the root cause is always moisture. Simply scrubbing the surface with bleach will not kill the roots, and the mold will return quickly. More critically, aggressive scrubbing can release a massive number of spores into your apartment's air, potentially worsening your children's coughing. Professional remediation is necessary to properly contain the area, remove contaminated porous materials like drywall, and use HEPA filtration to capture spores during the process.

The health symptoms you note are a significant reason to act carefully. While not all black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, many species can cause the respiratory irritation you're seeing. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and sometimes air testing, is needed to identify the full extent and the species present. This is the only way to confirm the environment is safe again.

Your first step is to identify and stop the moisture source. Have an AC technician inspect and repair the suspected leak immediately. For the mold itself, contacting a company with certified remediators and its own microbiology lab is advised. They can provide the documentation to verify the mold was removed correctly and the air quality is restored, which is crucial for peace of mind with children involved.
