Can I remove JLT bathroom mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold starting to grow in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It's in a Jumeirah Lakes Towers apartment and the room doesn't have a window, so ventilation isn't great. What's the most effective way to handle this ourselves before it gets worse, or should I call a professional company right away?

For a small, new patch in a JLT bathroom, DIY is often effective. The UAE's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, especially in windowless bathrooms where condensation builds up.

Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wear a mask and gloves. For persistent stains, a paste of baking soda and water can be used for scrubbing. After cleaning, the most critical step is addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider purchasing a small dehumidifier to keep humidity below 60%.

If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has penetrated behind grout or drywall, or returns quickly after a thorough DIY cleaning, a professional assessment is recommended. In Dubai, remediation companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the species and test for hidden growth behind walls, which is common when the surface stain is at a ceiling joint. They also use industrial air scrubbers and methods to correct the underlying humidity issue, not just remove the visible mold.
