Can I remove Jumeirah bedroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold starting to spread on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It must have been hidden there for a while because the room has started to smell damp, especially in the mornings. I’m really worried about my family’s health with this humidity.
What is the most effective and safe way to remove this mold ourselves, or is this a job where I absolutely need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

The patch behind your wardrobe is a classic Dubai issue, caused by a combination of year-round AC use creating cold surfaces and our high ambient humidity leading to condensation. For a small, new patch (under one square foot), DIY removal can be effective if done safely.
First, contain the area. Seal the bedroom door with plastic sheeting and tape to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted detergent; avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can push mould deeper into porous materials. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. The key is not just cleaning but eliminating the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation and use a dehumidifier in the room. However, since this was hidden and you're noticing a persistent damp smell, the wall cavity behind may be affected. This is very common here when condensation occurs on cold pipes or within partition walls. In this case, professional assessment is strongly advised. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall, determining the true extent. Remediation then involves controlled removal, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence. For health safety and to ensure the problem is solved at its source, calling a certified company for an assessment is the most reliable course of action. |
