Can I remove large bedroom closet mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Arabian Ranches has been smelling damp for a while, and I just pulled back the clothes to find a huge patch of black mold spreading up the wall. It must have been growing slowly since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago. Is this something I can handle myself with cleaners from Ace Hardware, or given the size and location, should I just call a professional mold remediation company and what would that likely cost?

Given the size and location, this requires professional remediation. The damp smell indicates a persistent moisture source, likely condensation from the AC system or a hidden leak in the external wall, both common in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and construction methods. A patch large enough to be described as "huge" and spreading suggests significant growth, often with a root system deep into the drywall or plaster.

DIY cleaning with off-the-shelf products like bleach or vinegar only addresses surface discoloration, not the root cause or the hidden microbial structure. This can agitate the colony, releasing a large number of spores into your indoor air and providing temporary visual improvement before it rapidly regrows. The health risks from prolonged exposure, especially in a bedroom, and the potential for structural damage to the wall make this a job for experts.

A proper remediation process involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials like drywall, and treating the cavity with antimicrobial solutions. Crucially, they will then perform a diagnostic inspection to identify and resolve the underlying moisture issue; without this, the mold will return regardless of cleaning. The cost is driven by the extent of demolition required and the complexity of the moisture source diagnosis, so an on-site assessment is necessary for an accurate scope of work.
