Can I remove large mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back of the master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It's spread onto some clothes and the wall, and the damp smell is really strong. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional? For a job this size, what's a realistic price range for proper mold removal in Dubai?

For a large patch of mold from a suspected AC leak in a Jumeirah villa, especially one that has spread to porous materials like drywall and clothing, professional remediation is strongly advised. The damp smell indicates active microbial growth, which DIY methods often fail to address at the root cause.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces as it only removes surface discoloration, not the mold's structure (hyphae) growing within the material. The underlying moisture issue—likely a condensate drain leak from the AC—must be identified and repaired first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly in Dubai's high humidity. Disturbing a large patch yourself also risks releasing a significant number of spores into your home's air.

Professional remediation is required to properly contain the area, remove contaminated porous materials like affected drywall and insulation, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. For a job of this size, expect pricing to be influenced by the extent of demolition needed, the area's square footage, and the required containment procedures. Reputable providers in Dubai should follow standards like the IICRC S520 and will provide a detailed scope of work and cost after an on-site inspection. Always request a post-remediation verification test from an independent third party to confirm the space is truly mold-free.
