Can I remove large mold patch myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. It's a pretty big black patch, maybe two feet wide.
Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

For a patch that size and given the symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and only bleaches the surface, leaving the root structure intact. The visible growth is often just the tip of the iceberg; the hyphae can penetrate deep into building materials.
In Dubai's high humidity, this level of growth indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely condensation from the AC or a hidden leak. A pro will use industrial HEPA scrubbers and negative air machines to contain spores during removal, preventing them from spreading to other rooms—a significant risk with DIY that can exacerbate health issues. They will also identify and rectify the moisture source, which is critical to prevent rapid regrowth. While the initial cost is higher, improper removal can lead to recurring problems and higher long-term expenses. For health-related cases, especially with children, a certified company that provides before-and-after lab testing is the only way to verify the environment is truly safe. |
