Can I remove Mirdif mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Mirdif. It must have been growing there slowly since the humidity spiked last month. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Black spots behind furniture in Mirdif are a very common issue due to our high humidity and condensation from AC units. For a small patch (under one square meter), a thorough DIY approach can be effective if done correctly.

First, identify and fix the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from the cold wall meeting humid air, exacerbated by the wardrobe blocking airflow. Moving the furniture slightly away from the wall can prevent recurrence. To clean, never use bleach; it is mostly water and can feed future mold growth while its fumes are harmful in an enclosed space. A diluted vinegar or dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner is better for a non-porous surface. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and dispose of any contaminated materials like cardboard boxes.

However, with children experiencing a persistent cough for weeks, this indicates potential airborne spore circulation, moving beyond a simple surface issue. The wall cavity itself could be affected, which DIY methods cannot address. In this case, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to determine the extent of the growth and identify the specific mold species, as some types are more strongly linked to respiratory irritation. Reputable Dubai-based remediation companies follow strict protocols for containment and removal to prevent spreading spores throughout your home during the cleaning process, which is a significant risk with uncontained DIY removal.
