Can I remove mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bedroom in Al Barsha that we rarely use has felt really damp the last few months. I finally pulled the wardrobe away from the wall yesterday and found a bunch of black and greenish spots spreading from the corner near the AC vent. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's getting worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspector?

Based on your description of the situation in Al Barsha, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and advise against attempting removal yourself. The location of the growth—near the AC vent and spreading from a corner—indicates a potential moisture source that needs to be professionally identified. The combination of Dubai's high ambient humidity and continuous AC operation creates significant condensation risks, often within wall cavities or AC drip pans, which are invisible to a homeowner.

Using bleach is a common but ineffective and potentially hazardous DIY mistake. It only bleaches the surface mold and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the fungal roots (hyphae) embedded in porous materials like drywall. Furthermore, improper agitation during cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, contaminating other areas of your home and posing health risks.

In the UAE, professional remediation follows strict IICRC standards. A certified inspector, like those from Saniservice, will conduct a thorough assessment including moisture mapping and, if necessary, air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration. This is critical as some molds, like Stachybotrys (black mold), require specific containment protocols for safe removal.

Given the extent you've described, a professional approach is essential. They will not only remediate the visible growth but also identify and rectify the underlying moisture issue, such as an obstructed AC drain line or insufficient insulation, to prevent recurrence.

For a definitive diagnosis and a safe, permanent solution, contact our specialists at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection.
