Can I remove mold myself or need a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah 3 has been leaking a bit, and now we have a bunch of black and greenish mold spots on the wall behind the bedroom cupboard. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back worse a few days later. Is this something I can handle myself with a bleach spray from ACE, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies, and what’s the typical cost for a small job like this?

Based on your description of the situation in Jumeirah 3, I strongly recommend against a DIY approach and advise you to call a professional company like Saniservice for an inspection. The recurring growth after a vinegar wipe is a major red flag, indicating a persistent moisture source and a deeper, established mold colony that superficial cleaning cannot address.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use are constant factors, AC leaks are a primary cause of severe mold issues. The wall cavity behind the cupboard is a classic problem area; the leak has likely saturated the drywall and insulation, creating an ideal environment for mold to thrive out of sight. Bleach or other consumer-grade sprays are ineffective on porous materials like drywall and can actually aggravate the problem by releasing more spores into the air, potentially affecting your indoor air quality and health.

A professional remediation process for a case like this is methodical. It involves identifying and repairing the AC leak, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of the contaminated porous materials (drywall, insulation), and using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial agents to clean the area. The cost for a localized job of this nature typically ranges from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the extent of the damage behind the wall.
