Can I remove new black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It wasn't there before the recent humidity spike, and the room has felt damp for a couple of weeks now. I’m worried it’s spreading behind our clothes. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

A small, new patch of black mold on a surface, caused by a recent humidity spike, can often be addressed yourself. The priority is to identify and stop the moisture source first—this is often condensation from an AC duct running through the closet or a small leak.
For a surface clean, a mix of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover is more effective than bleach, which only lightens the color without killing the root structure. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and monitor it. If the mold returns within a week, the moisture issue is still active or it has penetrated the wall material. Given its location in a closet and your description of a damp feeling, the mold is likely more extensive behind the wall or under the flooring. A professional inspection is recommended to assess the full scope with a moisture meter and possibly thermal imaging. In Dubai’s climate, hidden condensation is a common driver, and a full remediation may require addressing insulation around cold water pipes or AC ducts to prevent recurrence. |
