Can I remove recurring bathroom mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom. It's in the grout between the tiles right by the shower, and it came back just a couple of weeks after I scrubbed it with bleach. Living in Jumeirah, the humidity is just brutal on everything. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger product, or is it time to call in a professional cleaning company?

Recurring bathroom mold, especially in Jumeirah's high humidity, is a common and frustrating issue. While surface cleaning with bleach can remove the visible stain, it often fails to kill the root structure (hyphae) embedded deep within porous grout. This is why it returns so quickly.

For a small, isolated patch, you can try a stronger approach. Use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide, not just bleach. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. The key is addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls and tiles to reduce condensation.

However, if the mold returns persistently despite these measures, or if the area is larger than a square foot, a DIY approach is likely insufficient. The coughing you mentioned suggests potential spore dispersal, which a surface clean won't contain. In such cases, professional assessment is advised to determine the extent of growth and identify hidden moisture problems, like a leaking pipe behind the tile. A proper remediation will involve antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth and identify the underlying humidity issue, which is critical in Dubai's climate where AC use can create significant condensation.
