Can I remove recurring bathroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black speckled mold growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's in the corner that never gets any sun and always feels damp, even hours after a shower. I tried scrubbing it with a bleach spray but it came back within a couple of weeks. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company in Dubai to handle it properly?

Based on the description of your situation—recurring black speckled mold in a perpetually damp, shaded shower corner that has resisted a bleach treatment—this is a classic case of a persistent moisture issue that DIY methods are unlikely to resolve permanently.

The primary reason bleach fails is that it only removes the surface discoloration you can see, not the deep-rooted hyphae (the root structure) within the porous grout. More concerning, the bleach residue can actually provide a food source for the mold, causing it to return more aggressively. The climate in Dubai is a significant contributing factor. The high ambient humidity, combined with condensation from hot showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, provides the perfect breeding ground for mold. This environment means the underlying cause is not being addressed.

For a small, surface-level issue, a high-grade, acid-based grout cleaner from a hardware store, used with strict personal protective equipment (PPE) including an N95 mask and goggles, could be attempted. However, your case suggests a deeper contamination. Scrubbing can also fracture the grout, creating more hiding spots for mold.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. In the UAE, proper remediation follows standards like the IICRC S520, which we adhere to at Saniservice. A pro will assess the extent of the problem, often using moisture meters and borescopes, to see if moisture has penetrated behind the tiles. The solution may involve professional-grade antimicrobial agents, drying equipment, and potentially grout removal and resealing to create a permanent barrier.

For a definitive solution and to ensure your family's health, it is best to call a specialist. Please contact us at Saniservice for a thorough assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
