Can I remove recurring black mold from AC closet myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold spreading on the back wall and on some of our shoes. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back darker in just a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Recurring black mold after a DIY vinegar clean indicates a persistent moisture source and a deeper infestation you likely can't address yourself. In Dubai's climate, the constant AC operation creates significant condensation, and a leak inside a closed closet provides the perfect damp, dark environment for mold to thrive within the wall cavity itself.
Vinegar and most household cleaners only remove surface discoloration; they cannot kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall or shoe leather. The rapid, darker return confirms the mold is actively growing deeper within. Attempting a "stronger" cleaner, especially bleach, is not advised as it can release harmful spores and fumes in a confined space and won't solve the underlying moisture problem. You absolutely need a professional assessment. The leak must be repaired by an AC technician first to eliminate the water source. For the mold, a reputable remediation company will contain the area to prevent spore spread, safely remove contaminated porous materials (like affected drywall), and use industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial treatments. For a situation involving a leak and recurrence, DIY is not recommended due to health risks and the high probability of it returning without proper containment and drying. |
