Can I remove recurring black mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It must have been there a while and I think it might be from a small AC leak during the humid summer. I’ve wiped it with vinegar but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Recurring black mold after a vinegar wipe points to an active moisture source, which is common in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and year-round AC use create significant condensation risks, especially from a small leak in the unit's drain line or insulation.

For a small patch, you can attempt a more thorough DIY approach. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not just vinegar, and scrub the area well. Crucially, you must identify and fix the moisture source—this is almost always a small AC condensate leak in a closet. Check the drain pan and line for blockages or disconnections. After cleaning, run a dehumidifier in the space and monitor it closely.

If the mold returns again, which is likely with a persistent leak, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact leak location behind walls that isn't visible. In villas, the problem often stems from the AC duct running through the ceiling void above the closet. For health safety, especially in a bedroom, a lab test can identify the mold species to confirm it is a common type like Cladosporium and not something more concerning. Professional remediation ensures the hidden root cause is resolved, not just the visible surface growth.
