Can I remove recurring black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's started creeping along the grout in our Jumeirah apartment's master bathroom. It's been spreading more since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I tried scrubbing it with bleach but it just came back darker a week later.
Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Thank you for your question. Recurring black mold in bathroom grout, particularly in a humid climate like Dubai's, is a common but serious issue that often indicates a deeper problem. The high humidity and constant use of air conditioning create a perfect environment for mold spores to thrive, especially in areas with persistent moisture like bathrooms.
Your experience with bleach is typical; it removes surface discoloration but does not address the root cause. Mold has hyphae (root-like structures) that penetrate deep into porous materials like grout and even the underlying wall structure. Bleach, being mostly water, can actually feed the deeper mold growth, causing it to return more aggressively. For a small, surface-level patch, a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, used with strict protective equipment (N95 mask, gloves), can be attempted. However, given that the mold is recurring and you have health symptoms like coughing in children, this is a strong indicator of a more significant infestation. Disturbed mold spores become airborne and can affect indoor air quality throughout the apartment, exacerbating respiratory issues. In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict health and safety standards to protect residents. A DIY approach risks inadequate containment, cross-contamination, and exposure. I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the hidden source of moisture—whether it's a micro-leak, insufficient sealing, or condensation within the walls—and then perform a complete remediation following Dubai Municipality guidelines. This includes containment, HEPA filtration, and the application of professional-grade antimicrobial solutions to prevent recurrence.
