Can I remove recurring closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has a small patch of black mold that’s been slowly growing since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago. I tried wiping it down with vinegar, but it came back darker than before. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional to stop it for good?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, extremely common in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity interacting with year-round air-conditioned cold surfaces. Your outside wall is a thermal bridge, and the temperature differential is causing moisture to condense inside the closet, creating the perfect environment for mold.

Vinegar is a mild fungistatic agent but is not a registered biocide and often fails to kill the root system (mycelia) penetrating porous surfaces like drywall. Its moisture content can even feed the mold, explaining why it returned darker.

For a small patch (under 1 sq. ft), a DIY attempt with a UAE-approved biocide like hydrogen peroxide-based cleaners can be made. However, this is only a surface treatment. The critical failure point is the hidden moisture source. You must identify and rectify the cause—this could be inadequate insulation in the wall, low AC thermostat settings causing excessive cooling, or lack of air circulation in the closet.

Under the Dubai Municipality regulations, any recurring mold issue indicates a persistent dampness problem that requires professional assessment. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact condensation points and moisture meters to quantify the problem within the wall cavity, which is impossible to diagnose visually.

For a permanent solution, the affected drywall often needs to be removed, the area treated with professional-grade antimicrobials, and the root cause (insulation, ventilation) addressed. Given the recurrence, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our team at Saniservice is equipped to handle this from diagnosis to remediation, ensuring it complies with local health and safety standards.
