Can I remove recurring shower mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold starting to grow in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. I tried wiping it with bleach spray, but it came back after a couple of weeks and the damp smell is lingering. Is this something I can tackle myself with a better product, or is it time to call in a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description of a recurring black mold patch in a high-humidity area like a Marina apartment, this is a common yet serious issue in Dubai. The combination of constant AC use, which creates significant temperature differentials, and the high ambient humidity leads to persistent condensation—the primary fuel for mold growth. Bleach is a common but ineffective remedy; it only bleaches the surface pigments and does not address the hyphae (roots) penetrating the porous ceiling material.

For a small, recurring patch, you can attempt a more targeted approach. I recommend using a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach. Thoroughly scrub the area, ensuring it is completely dry afterwards. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Increase bathroom ventilation by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and regularly wipe down wet surfaces. A dehumidifier can also help manage ambient moisture.

However, the fact that the damp smell is lingering is a significant red flag. This often indicates that the mold growth is not superficial and may have spread behind the tiles or into the ceiling void, which is inaccessible to DIY cleaning. In such cases, and especially given the potential health risks of persistent Stachybotrys (black mold) exposure, a professional assessment is strongly advised.

Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact extent of the hidden infestation and the condensation points. We then perform a complete remediation protocol, including containment, air scrubbing, and antimicrobial application, to ensure it is eradicated at the source, not just cleaned cosmetically. For a definitive solution and to protect your property's air quality, I recommend calling our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection.
