Can I remove recurring shower mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black and green spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s the windowless bathroom, so it never gets completely dry. I tried spraying some bleach cleaner, but it came back after a couple of weeks. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

Recurring shower mold in a windowless Dubai bathroom is a very common issue driven by the high humidity and constant condensation. Bleach cleaners only remove surface discoloration but do not address the root cause or kill the mold's hyphae (roots) embedded deep in the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.

For a small, recurring patch, you can attempt a more targeted DIY approach. Use a dedicated EPA-registered fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach, and follow the dwell time on the label precisely. Scrub with a stiff brush and ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterwards with a squeegee and fan. However, if the growth is extensive, has penetrated deeply, or returns persistently, the underlying issue is likely excess moisture that DIY can't control.

Professional remediation is advised if the area is larger than a square foot, if you suspect mold behind the tiles due to failing grout or sealant, or for anyone with respiratory sensitivities. A proper service will diagnose the moisture source, use industrial-grade antimicrobials, and often recommend improving ventilation, which is critical in our climate. They can also conduct post-remediation verification testing to confirm the mold is gone, not just visually cleaned.

The key for any bathroom here is relentless moisture control. Always use the exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after showering, regularly squeegee walls, and ensure your grout and sealant are in perfect condition to prevent water intrusion.
