Can I remove recurring shower mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for the last couple of months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach spray, it just comes back a week later. It's the bathroom attached to the main bedroom in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. Is this something I can fix myself with a specific product from ACE Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to stop it for good?

Black spots in shower grout are common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. This is likely mold growth, not just surface dirt.
For a DIY approach, use a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner (3-10% concentration) or a dedicated grout mold remover from a hardware store. Bleach only removes surface color but doesn't kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry after each shower by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes. If the mold returns within weeks despite proper cleaning and moisture control, the issue is likely deeper. In many JVC apartments, hidden leaks behind tiles or within the wall can feed mold growth, which no surface cleaner can resolve. A professional inspection with a borescope can identify hidden moisture sources. For persistent, recurring mold in a master bathroom, a professional assessment is recommended to prevent potential spread into the bedroom area. |
