Can I remove recurring shower mold or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom's grout in the shower has been getting these black spots for a couple of months now, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back. I'm in a villa in Jumeirah and it's the en-suite that gets used the most. With this humidity, is this a job I can tackle myself with a better product, or do I need to call in a professional cleaner to stop it for good?

Recurring black mold in shower grout is often a deep-seated issue, not just a surface stain. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in a frequently used en-suite, the moisture is likely penetrating behind the tiles, making DIY cleaning with bleach a temporary fix. Bleach only removes surface color and can push the root structure deeper.

For a persistent problem, start by improving ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces to reduce immediate moisture. For the grout itself, a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner applied according to the label instructions is more effective than bleach.

If the mold returns within a few weeks despite these measures, the infestation is likely behind the wall. At this point, a professional assessment is recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check for dampness in the wall cavity. In many Dubai villas, a failed sealant or a tiny crack in the grout is enough for humidity to create a larger hidden problem. Remediation involves removing the affected grout, treating the substrate, and re-sealing with moisture-resistant materials—a process that stops the cycle for good.
