Can I remove shower grout mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles right by the shower. It's been super humid lately and I think the ventilation isn't great. Is this something I can tackle myself with a trip to Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

Small black spots in shower grout are common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. You can often manage this yourself if the area is small (under one square foot) and the mold is surface-level.

For a DIY approach, use a dedicated grout mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Apply, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse thoroughly. The key is to dry the area completely after; use a squeegee after every shower and run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes. If the mold returns quickly or has penetrated deep into the grout, the moisture issue is likely behind the wall.

Professional assessment is needed if the mold covers a large area, keeps returning despite thorough cleaning, or if you notice a persistent musty smell. This indicates a hidden moisture problem that DIY cleaning can't fix. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the source of the moisture—like a leaking pipe or failed sealant—and proper remediation prevents it from spreading into wall cavities. Companies with microbiology labs can also test to confirm the mold type, which is important for health concerns.
