Can I remove shower mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black mold spots appearing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's the windowless bathroom, so it's always a bit damp, but the dehumidifier broke last month and it's gotten worse since then. I'm worried about my asthma acting up. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

For a small, surface-level mold issue confined to grout lines, a distilled white vinegar solution (undiluted, applied for at least one hour before scrubbing) can be a temporary DIY measure. However, in the context of Dubai's high humidity and your specific circumstances, I must advise caution.

The key concern is not the visible surface growth but the underlying moisture problem. The broken dehumidifier is the primary issue; without addressing this, the mold will return rapidly. Bathrooms here, especially windowless ones, are prime environments for mold due to constant condensation from showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. Surface cleaning does not address hyphae (root structures) that may have penetrated porous grout.

Given your asthma, which makes you more susceptible to respiratory irritation from mycotoxins and spores, aggressive scrubbing can aerosolize these particles, potentially triggering a reaction. For anything beyond a few small spots, or if the mold returns after cleaning, professional assessment is strongly recommended.

Our company, Saniservice, performs comprehensive inspections that include moisture mapping with thermal cameras and hygrometers to identify the exact humidity source. We then employ industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbers and dehumidifiers to create containment and dry the structure before antimicrobial remediation. This scientific approach ensures the problem is solved at its root, protecting your health and property.
