Can I remove shower mold with bleach or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years in JVC and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout on the ceiling above our shower. The bathroom doesn't have a window and the exhaust fan seems weak. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaner?

Bleach is a temporary fix for surface mold on non-porous surfaces like tiles, but it’s ineffective on porous grout where the roots (hyphae) remain. The high humidity and lack of ventilation in a Dubai bathroom create a perfect environment for rapid regrowth.
For a small, surface-level patch, you can try a dedicated grout cleaner from a hardware store. However, since the mold is on the ceiling and the exhaust is weak, the underlying moisture issue isn't solved. The Dubai climate, especially during summer, means condensation builds up constantly. If the mold covers an area larger than a square meter, has a musty odor, or if you see staining on the ceiling drywall itself, it’s time for a professional assessment. They can determine if moisture has penetrated behind the tiles, which requires remediation beyond cleaning. A proper fix involves addressing the ventilation first—repairing or upgrading the fan is essential to prevent recurrence. For persistent problems, a lab test can identify the mold type, which guides the correct removal protocol. |
