can i remove small black mold myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. For a small area like this in a Jumeirah villa, is it something I can tackle myself with a bleach solution, or should I definitely call a professional mold removal company?

For a small patch like that, you can likely handle it yourself, but with important precautions. The Dubai climate, especially the recent humidity, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in closets and behind furniture where air circulation is poor.

First, address the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from an AC unit or a small, unnoticed leak. Check the closet's exterior wall for any dampness and ensure your AC is not set so cold that it causes excessive condensation. Improving ventilation in that room is critical.

For removal, do not use bleach. It only bleaches the mold and does not kill the roots, and its fumes can be hazardous indoors. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and then monitor it for several days. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

You should call a professional for an inspection if the patch is larger than one square meter, if it returns quickly after cleaning, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues. A professional assessment can identify the exact species and the full extent of the problem, which is often hidden behind walls. In many Jumeirah villas, what appears as a small patch can be part of a larger issue linked to the building's envelope or AC condensate drain lines.
