Can I remove small black mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. With the humidity rising again, I'm worried it will spread, but it's not a huge area yet. How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is this something I can handle myself with a vinegar solution before it gets worse?

For a very small patch (under one square foot) that's on a non-porous surface like tile or glass, a DIY approach can be a first step. A solution of distilled white vinegar is often more effective than bleach on many common molds, as it can penetrate porous materials slightly better to kill the root structure.
However, in Dubai's climate, interior wall mold is rarely an isolated surface issue. The visible patch is often just the symptom, indicating a deeper moisture problem within the wall cavity, likely from condensation from your AC system or a minor, hidden leak. Simply wiping the surface will not address this hidden moisture source, and the mold will almost certainly return. For any mold on drywall, plaster, or wood—which are porous—professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can identify and rectify the underlying moisture source, which is the only way to prevent recurrence. Attempting to scrub porous materials can inadvertently release a large number of spores into your indoor air. If the area is larger than a standard sheet of paper, or if anyone in the household has allergies or respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is the safest course of action to ensure it is handled completely. |
