Can I remove small mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from a slow AC leak. It’s spread to a few shoes and bags stored there. I’m worried about my family’s health and the cost. For a small area like this, is it something I can handle myself with products from ACE, or should I just call a professional cleaning company right away?

For a small patch (under one square meter) from a known AC leak, DIY removal is possible if no one in the household has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system. The source of the moisture must be fixed first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape. For non-porous surfaces like the wall, use a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach; it doesn't kill mold beneath the surface and can worsen indoor air quality. Discard the porous, affected items like the shoes and bags, as the mold roots penetrate deeply and cannot be fully cleaned.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use mean hidden condensation is a common issue. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. If the mold returns after cleaning, if the area is larger than one square meter, or if you smell a persistent musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the full extent of the moisture problem, which is often behind walls from a slow pipe or AC drain leak. For health safety, they can also take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type.
