Can I remove sofa wall mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the Marina apartment has started to show these black spots, and we only noticed it after moving the furniture to clean. It’s been super humid the last few weeks and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray from Carrefour, or is it time to call in one of those professional mold removal companies?

It depends on the extent. For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. The high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use in Dubai apartments, especially in coastal areas like Marina, create a perfect environment for this.

First, identify and fix the moisture source. It's often condensation from an AC supply vent, a small plumbing leak inside the wall, or capillary moisture from the building envelope. Wiping with vinegar or a diluted bleach solution can remove surface mold, but it will return if the dampness isn't resolved.

For a larger infestation, recurring patches, or if the wall feels damp, professional assessment is recommended. Spreading black spots suggest an active moisture problem within the wall cavity that needs diagnosis. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source, which is often hidden. They also follow Dubai Municipality guidelines for containment during removal to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. In these cases, a lab test to identify the mold type can also be valuable for determining the appropriate remediation protocol.
