Can I remove this AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Downtown Dubai has been leaking a bit into the closet in the master bedroom, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black fuzzy spots on the back wall and our leather bags stored there. I tried wiping it but the smell is still really strong. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a pro? If so, what’s the average cost for a mold remediation company here to treat something like this?

Based on the description of your situation in Downtown Dubai, I strongly recommend against attempting to remove this mold yourself with bleach. The presence of a persistent, strong odor after wiping indicates that the mold has penetrated beyond the surface. This is a serious case that requires professional assessment and remediation.

The black fuzzy growth is likely Stachybotrys or another toxigenic species, commonly fueled by chronic moisture from AC leaks, a frequent issue in our humid climate where condensation is a year-round challenge. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and leather, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. Furthermore, DIY attempts can aerosolize harmful spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict hygiene and safety standards (like Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety Department guidelines) that DIY methods cannot meet. It involves specialized equipment: HEPA filtration, antimicrobial agents, and containment barriers to prevent cross-contamination.

For a localized issue affecting a closet and contents, a professional remediation cost can range from AED 1,500 to AED 4,000, depending on the extent of the damage to the wall and the items. Given the AC is the source, the leak must also be repaired to prevent recurrence.

For a certified inspection and a precise quote, you should call in a professional team. Contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They can conduct a thorough assessment, including air quality testing, and provide a compliant remediation plan.
