Can I remove this bedroom closet mold myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It wasn't there during the last cleaning, and I'm worried it might be spreading behind the clothes. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach spray from the supermarket, or is it time to call in a professional company?

A small, visible patch of black mold in a closet is often a DIY project. The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In Dubai, this is frequently due to condensation from an AC supply duct running inside the wall or a small, unnoticed leak from an adjacent bathroom. High humidity getting trapped in a closed, poorly ventilated closet is another common culprit.
You can clean a small area (under one square foot) with a solution of detergent and water, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like drywall or plaster. Scrubbing with a microfibre cloth and proper detergent is more effective. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or causing skin irritation. However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, that confirms an ongoing moisture issue you haven't resolved. If the patch is larger than one square foot, if you suspect it has spread behind the wall (warping, a musty smell, discoloration), or if household members experience unexplained respiratory issues, a professional inspection is warranted. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity and lab analysis to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. For rentals, document the issue and notify your landlord or property management company immediately, as structural moisture problems are typically their responsibility to fix. |
