Can I remove this black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to clean. The wall feels slightly damp and the patch is about the size of a dinner plate. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here?

Given the damp wall and the size of the patch, this is a moisture issue that requires more than surface cleaning. In Dubai's climate, hidden condensation or a minor leak behind the wall is a common cause, and simply wiping the visible mold won't address the source.

For a patch that size and with underlying dampness, professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify and rectify the moisture source—be it a leaking pipe, capillary rise, or condensation from AC ducts—before any remediation begins. This is critical; without solving the dampness, the mold will return quickly.

DIY methods like vinegar or bleach are not advised here. Bleach can lighten the stain but doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces like drywall, and it can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. More importantly, improper scrubbing can disturb the colony, releasing a large number of spores into your bedroom air, which could exacerbate your children's coughing.

A certified remediation company will isolate the area, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, safely remove contaminated materials if necessary, and treat the area with professional-grade biocides. The final step should always be a post-remediation verification test to confirm the spore count in the room has returned to acceptable levels, ensuring the environment is safe for your family. Given the health symptoms, this verification is particularly important.
