Can I remove this black mould myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mould in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten worse since the recent humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

That black mould in the corner of a villa closet is a classic Dubai issue, driven by the high humidity and the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall. This creates condensation inside the wall cavity, providing the perfect damp environment for mould to grow.

For a patch smaller than one square meter (about 3x3 feet), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, skip the bleach. It’s mostly water, which can feed the mould roots inside the porous wall, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. Instead, use a dedicated mould remover spray or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and consider using a dehumidifier in the room to keep moisture levels down.

The critical factor is whether you’ve fixed the moisture source. Simply cleaning the visible mould is a temporary fix if condensation is still occurring within the wall. If the mould returns quickly, covers a larger area, or you discover a musty smell, the problem is likely more extensive than what’s visible.

In these cases, a professional assessment is advised to identify the root cause—be it insufficient insulation, a minor leak, or compromised vapour barriers. A proper remediation will involve containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth, followed by verification, often with lab testing, to confirm the space is truly clean. For villas, this is a common and solvable problem when addressed correctly.
