Can I remove this closet mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed these black, speckled patches that have been slowly spreading over the last couple of months. I wiped it down with vinegar, but it came back worse than before and now my clothes have a faint damp smell. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional company to deal with it?

This is likely a moisture issue from condensation, common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. The outside wall can be a cold spot where moisture condenses, especially in closets with poor air circulation. Vinegar often fails because it doesn't address the moisture source and can just spread spores.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt remediation. Use a microfiber cloth with a diluted detergent solution (not bleach) to wipe the surface, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. However, since it returned stronger and has affected your clothes, the moisture problem is likely persistent and the mold may have penetrated the porous wall material. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to find the exact source—whether it's a small leak, insufficient insulation on the external wall, or indoor humidity. Proper remediation involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, and applying specialized antimicrobials, followed by fixing the underlying moisture cause to prevent recurrence. For health safety and to ensure it's properly eliminated, hiring a certified company with a microbiology lab for verification is the most reliable path. |
