Can I remove this closet mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the inside wall has had a weird damp smell since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I finally pulled everything out and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate spreading on the back wall. We’ve lived in this villa in Mirdif for two years and never had an issue before. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and what would that kind of job typically cost?

The size and location on an interior wall suggest a moisture issue, not just surface condensation. In Dubai's climate, a hidden leak from a pipe, shower, or AC condensate drain line behind the wall is a common cause for this. Surface cleaning alone will fail if the water source isn't fixed.
For a patch that size, a DIY approach with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall but does not kill the roots (hyphae), and its high water content can actually feed the mold deeper within the wall. It also poses respiratory risks in an enclosed space. Proper remediation requires isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials, and HEPA vacuuming to capture spores. Given this is on a structural wall in your villa, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify and rectify the hidden moisture source. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the problem's origin. Remediation cost is not fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the water damage and structural repairs needed behind the wall. For a proper assessment and quote, you would need an on-site evaluation from a company with the right diagnostic tools. |
