Can I remove this recurring black mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging the room. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back within a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Recurring black mold after cleaning with vinegar indicates a persistent moisture source, which is common in Dubai due to high humidity and continuous AC use causing condensation. For a small area (under 1 square meter), you can attempt remediation yourself.

Start by identifying and fixing the moisture source. The location behind the wardrobe suggests poor air circulation or a possible small leak from the external wall or AC condensation line. Move the furniture away from the wall. Clean the area with a dedicated mold removal solution or a mixture of detergent and water, not just vinegar, which doesn't kill all spores. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the surface is completely dry. Use a dehumidifier in the room and improve ventilation to prevent immediate return.

However, if the mold returns a second time or the affected area is larger, professional assessment is strongly recommended. In Dubai's climate, hidden moisture within walls or under floors is a frequent issue that DIY methods cannot resolve. A professional inspection, often involving moisture meters and thermal imaging, can locate the hidden source. They will also perform lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is crucial if your children are experiencing respiratory issues, as some types pose higher health risks. Remediation companies follow strict protocols to contain the area and prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during cleaning.
