Can I remove this recurring black mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It must have been growing slowly from the humidity. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came right back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional?

Recurring mold after a vinegar wipe indicates the moisture source is still active and the fungal roots (hyphae) have penetrated the surface. In Dubai's climate, this is common due to high humidity and condensation from AC units creating ideal conditions for regrowth.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt a more thorough DIY approach. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, as it only removes surface color. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, let the solution dwell, then dry it completely with a fan or dehumidifier. Crucially, you must identify and address the moisture source. In a closet, this is often poor air circulation or cold spot condensation from an adjacent external wall or AC duct. If the mold returns a second time, the issue is likely deeper within the wall cavity or there is a hidden leak, requiring professional assessment. Remediation experts use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden water source, which is the only way to achieve a lasting solution. For health safety, especially with black mold, a lab test can identify the species and inform the appropriate remediation protocol. |
