Can I remove this recurring closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the master bedroom has a bunch of black fuzzy spots in the corner on the back wall. It started small after that really humid spell we had a couple of months ago, but it’s slowly spreading to a few of my shoes and bags. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Recurring mold after a DIY cleaning attempt indicates a persistent moisture source that hasn't been addressed. In Dubai's climate, this is almost always due to high humidity or condensation, often from a nearby AC unit's cold surface or a hidden leak in the wall.

For a small, surface-level spot (under ~1 sq. ft.), you can attempt a more thorough DIY approach. Use a microfiber cloth with a solution of diluted detergent or a dedicated mold remover, not just vinegar. However, the key is identifying and eliminating the moisture source. Check for a leaking pipe in the adjacent wall, ensure the room's AC is not set too low causing extreme condensation, and improve air circulation by leaving the wardrobe doors ajar occasionally.

Since the mold has spread to personal items like shoes and bags and has returned after treatment, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The mold growth on the wall is likely just the visible portion, with hyphae roots penetrating the porous surface. Pros use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water issue, which is critical for a permanent fix. Remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials like affected drywall, and HEPA vacuuming to capture spores. For valuable items, an IICRC-certified company can advise on specialized cleaning or restoration.

Without tackling the root cause, it will almost certainly return. Given the value of the items at risk and the potential for structural damage, an assessment is the most effective next step.
