Can I remove this wall mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's in a corner that doesn't get much air, and with the humidity lately, it seems to have exploded. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or is this a job for a professional company, and what would a reasonable cost be for a villa in Al Barsha?

That black spot pattern behind the sofa is a classic sign of condensation mold, extremely common in Dubai's climate. It grows where stagnant, humid air meets a cool wall surface, often from AC chill or an external cold bridge.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. However, bleach is not recommended; it's mostly water that feeds the root structure and its fumes are hazardous indoors. Use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner from a hardware store. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source. This means moving the sofa away from the wall, using a dehumidifier, and ensuring your AC is running sufficiently to control humidity. If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, it indicates a persistent moisture issue you haven't solved. In a villa, this could be a hidden leak or significant condensation within the wall cavity. This is when a professional assessment is needed. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the true source. Remediation for a localized area like this in Al Barsha is typically a straightforward process, but the cost is entirely dependent on the investigation's findings. You would need to request an onsite assessment for an accurate scope and quotation. |
