Can I remove toddler's bedroom mold myself or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit and now there's a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, on the wall behind the wardrobe. We only spotted it when we moved the furniture to clean for Eid. I'm worried about my toddler's breathing and wondering if I can just scrub it with bleach myself or if I need to call one of those specialist companies in Dubai. Is this a DIY job or a professional one?

With a toddler and a patch that size behind furniture, professional remediation is strongly advised. The primary concern is that DIY scrubbing can aerosolize mold spores, spreading them further into the air your child breathes and contaminating other areas. Bleach is also ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually feed the mold’s root system, causing it to return worse.

In Dubai’s climate, the underlying cause is almost always moisture from AC condensation leaks or high humidity. A professional will first identify and fix the water source—this is critical, as mold will recur within weeks otherwise. They then use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to remove the colony safely, preventing cross-contamination.

For a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous tile, a DIY approach with vinegar or a specialist cleaner might suffice. However, given the location on a wall (likely porous), the size, and the presence of a child with developing lungs, the risk isn't worth it. Reputable firms in Dubai provide before-and-after air quality testing from an independent lab to verify the space is truly safe, which is the only way to have confidence for a nursery. Look for providers who are NADCA-certified or can show you verifiable microbial lab reports.
