Can I remove toxic mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I've just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is against the outer wall. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried it's spreading inside the wall itself. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai?

Black spots behind a wardrobe on an outer wall, especially with the recent humidity spike, are a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth common in Dubai. The outer walls are often the coldest surface in a room, and when humid air from the AC or outside meets that cold wall, it creates the perfect damp environment for mold.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, do not use bleach. It is mostly water and can actually feed mold roots inside porous materials like drywall. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source—this is critical. Keep the dehumidifier running and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation.

Given that you suspect it's inside the wall and your children are experiencing symptoms, this strongly indicates a professional assessment is needed. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation of a larger colony within the wall cavity, fed by ongoing condensation or a hidden leak. Disturbing it during a DIY clean can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the cough.

In Dubai, reputable remediation companies should follow IICRC standards. They will conduct a proper inspection, often using borescopes to see inside walls, and perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count. Their process involves containment to prevent cross-contamination, HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, and safe removal of affected materials. The most important step they provide is identifying and rectifying the root moisture cause to prevent recurrence. For health concerns and suspected hidden growth, a professional inspection is the safest course of action.
